Since its initial founding in 1407, Suncheon Hyanggyo has suffered the pain of being relocated multiple times due to the flooding of Okcheon and wars, before settling in its current location in 1801. This place, which formed a large Confucian scholar force in the Jeollanam-do region, was an important educational institution responsible for the Confucian education and edification of local residents during the Joseon Dynasty. Passing through the Hongsalmun gate, major buildings such as Myeongnyundang Hall, a space for learning, and Daeseongjeon Shrine, a space for ancestral rites, are well preserved in the arrangement of having the school in the front and the shrine in the back.
Currently, it holds ancestral rites for past sages and operates traditional culture experience programs, welcoming visitors with a travel course that encompasses the past and present in connection with the nearby Ogridan-gil.
