Okcheon Seowon is a place built to commemorate Kim Goeng-pil, who was exiled due to the Muosahwa during the reign of Yeonsangun of Joseon. It was first founded in 1564 by Suncheon Magistrate Lee Jeong, and in 1568 it became the first in Jeolla Province to receive a royal charter. Destroyed during the Jeongyujaeran and other events, it was rebuilt by Confucian scholars in 1928 and remains to this day.
Inside the seowon are the Jibuidang lecture hall and Okcheonsa shrine, and on the right side of the entrance remains Suncheon Imcheongdae, which showcases the formative beauty of the Joseon Dynasty, making it a great place to experience the tranquil atmosphere and history of a traditional seowon.
