Gwangju 5.
Gwangju 5. 18 Freedom Park is a historical space that restores and recreates in their original forms the Sangmudae courtroom and brig where citizens were detained and faced military trials during the 5. 18 Democratization Movement in 1980.
Relocated to its current position, about 100m away from its original site due to the development of the Sangmu District, it was completed in 1999 and holds great significance as a place to honor the noble spirit of those who sacrificed for democracy and to vividly educate about history. Visitors can start at the Freedom Hall, where they can view 5. 18-related materials and videos, and then look around the Heonbyeongdae headquarters office and courtroom where the citizen militia was investigated and tried, as well as the brig where one can glimpse the suffering experienced by the prisoners at the time.
