The Gwangju National Folk Museum started as the Provincial Gwangju Museum in 1963 and, thanks to the support of citizens, was expanded and opened as the Gwangju Directly Controlled City Folk Museum at its current location in 1987. Reopening with its current name in 2020, it has been reborn as a complex cultural space encompassing the folk life history of Namdo and the modern history of Gwangju. The museum consists of the Namdominsoksil, which shows the lives of Namdo people from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, and the Gwangju Modern History Room, which contains the history of Gwangju from the Joseon period to the May 18 Democratization Movement.
Through the model of the disappeared Gwangjueupseong Fortress and the recreation of Chungjangno street in the 1920s-30s, you can vividly experience the appearance of old Gwangju. In the outdoor exhibition area, you can meet various stone objects such as stone jangseung and stone buddhas, as well as a Water Mill, making it a good place to rest while feeling the scent of traditional culture.
