Gwangju Sajik Park Observatory Tower is located on a historic site where the Sheji altar originally stood to pray for the peace of the country and an abundant harvest. The history of the observatory began in 1973 when Palgakjeong Pavilion was built as a resting space for citizens, and it was once a place holding fond memories for Gwangju citizens, as it housed a zoo and an amusement park together. In 2015, it was reborn as an observatory tower with a modern design symbolizing Gwangju, the city of light, and even won the bronze prize at the Gwangju Architecture Awards.
If you go up to the 4th-floor observatory, a panoramic view of downtown Gwangju, including Mudeungsan and the Asia Culture Center, unfolds refreshingly. It is a popular attraction loved by couples and family visitors, especially for the beautiful sparkling night view of the city. On the 3rd floor, the old appearances of Gwangju and a city diorama are exhibited, providing a special experience to overlook the past and present together.
