Located in the hilly area northwest of downtown Gongju, the Jeongjisan Site is strongly presumed to be the royal mortuary (binjeon) where the bodies of King Muryeong of Baekje and his queen were temporarily kept for 27 months before being enshrined in the Tomb of King Muryeong. Discovered during road construction, this site was also revealed to be a national-level ritual facility, and its importance is highlighted by the excavation of royal-related artifacts such as eight-petaled lotus-patterned roof-end tiles and ornate ritual vessel stands. In particular, traces of an icehouse (binggo) used to store ice to prevent the decay of the bodies were found, supporting the possibility of it being a royal mortuary.
At the site, visitors can enjoy beautiful scenery with sweeping views of the Geum River and Gongsanseong Fortress. It is also known as a sunrise spot in Gongju, allowing visitors to enjoy both its historical significance and natural landscape at the same time.
