Hwangsaebawi Martyrs' Shrine, which holds the painful history of Catholic persecution during the Joseon Dynasty, is the largest martyrdom site in Korea. This place, where the Geum River and Jemincheon Stream meet, is the site where countless Catholics lost their lives while keeping their faith, from the Catholic Persecution of 1801 to the Catholic Persecution of 1866, and the names of 337 martyrs are recorded here. There is a theory that its name comes from it being a stork (hwangsae) habitat, and another theory that it originated from the 'hangswae' (cangue) that the martyrs wore around their necks.
Today, pilgrims walk the Pilgrimage Path, seeing the Martyrs' Monument and the 'Twelve Stones of Light' symbolizing the 12 apostles, and reflect on the meaning of firm faith and sacrifice. It is a deeply meaningful space where you can look back on history in a solemn and reverent atmosphere.
