Gongju National Museum started with the efforts of Gongju citizens in 1934 and is a place that has protected Baekje cultural heritage. Its status was further elevated with the discovery of the Muryeong Royal Tomb in 1971, and the anecdote of Gongju residents protecting the artifacts against an attempt to move the excavated artifacts to Seoul at the time is famous. Following this incident, a new museum building was built in 1973, and today it is the key place where you can directly see National Treasure-level artifacts excavated from the Muryeong Royal Tomb.
In particular, the stone beast 'Jinmyosu', an imaginary animal that guarded the tomb, and the brilliant gold diadem ornaments of the king and queen are the main exhibits of the Ungjinbaekjesil, leaving a deep impression on visitors. It is also popular with family visitors, as it features an exhibition encompassing the history of Chungcheongnam-do from prehistoric times to the Joseon Dynasty, as well as a children's experience room.
