Gongju Hyanggyo Confucian School is an educational institution established during the Joseon dynasty for local Confucian education and holding memorial services for Confucian sages. Built in the early Joseon period, it was moved to its current location in 1623 and has undergone several renovations to reach its present state. This place shows the typical 'Jeonhak-humyo' (learning in front, shrine in back) structure, placing Myeongnyundang Lecture Hall, where students studied, at the front, and Daeseongjeon Shrine, where ancestral tablets of Confucian scholars are enshrined and memorial services were held, at the back.
Although the educational function has disappeared, it still continues the tradition by holding the Seokjeondaeje memorial rite in spring and autumn. Walk among the elegantly situated buildings along the sloping terrain and feel the tranquil atmosphere and the mood of a Joseon dynasty educational space.
