Gongsanseong Fortress, which protected Ungjin, the second capital of Baekje, is a mountain fortress with significant historical value from the Baekje period to the Joseon period. It holds the sad history of Baekje, which lost the Han River basin due to the invasion of Goguryeo, moving its capital to Ungjin and pledging a new start, and also served as the background for King Muryeong's efforts to strongly consolidate royal authority. Walking along the rectangular fortress walls, which are about 800m east to west and 400m north to south, you can encounter various ruins such as gate pavilions like Jinnamnu and Gongbukru Gate, as well as Imnyugak Pavilion, a lotus pond, and the Presumed Royal Palace Site.
In particular, climbing the West Gate, Geumseoru Gate, offers a panoramic view of downtown Gongju and the Tomb of King Muryeong, and near the East Gate, you can catch a glimpse of the traces of the earthen fortress from the Baekje period, allowing you to vividly feel a thousand years of history.
