Tongyeong Yonghwasa Temple is a millennium-old temple that originated from Jeongsusa Temple, which was founded during the reign of Queen Seondeok of Silla. After being destroyed by landslides and fires and undergoing several reconstructions, Byeokdamseonsa rebuilt it at its current location and gave it the name 'Yonghwasa Temple'. This name originated from a revelation when Mireukbul appeared in Byeokdamseonsa's dream and said, 'This will be a place for the Yonghwa assembly in the future, so call it Yonghwasa,' thus holding the deep meaning of the Maitreya faith.
When visiting, it is recommended to start with the main dharma hall, Bogwangjeon Hall, which is a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Gyeongsangnam-do, and then look around Yonghwajeon Hall enshrining Mireukbul, and the Judgement Hall enshrining Kṣitigarbha. Feel the mood of the millennium-old temple by looking around the various halls in the temple grounds, such as Chilseongjeon Hall, Haewollu Pavilion, Jeokmukdang Hall, and Tamjindang Hall, as well as the recently built Bulsari Sasaja Beomnyuntap Pagoda.
