Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory was opened to the public in 2006 when the lighthouse, which first lit up in 1957 after the Korean War for port development and fishing boat safety, was reborn as an observatory building. Located next to Yeonggeumjeong Pavilion, where the sound of the waves is said to sound like a geomungo (traditional Korean stringed instrument), it is also called 'Yeonggeumjeong Lighthouse Observatory' and is a representative attraction in Sokcho where you can take in the superb views of the East Sea and Seoraksan Mountain at a glance. In particular, the lantern, which has been in use since its first lighting in 1957, is Korea's only gravity-type lighthouse that rotates the lens with the gravity of a 230kg weight, offering an even more special experience as you can directly see the original function of the lighthouse illuminating the sea up to about 36km away.
Look around the lighthouse history exhibition hall and go up to the observatory to fully enjoy the beautiful scenery of Sokcho.
