Abai Village is a collective settlement of displaced people formed by refugees from Hamgyeong-do Province who settled on the Sokcho coast during the Korean War, waiting for the day they could return to their hometowns. As the name comes from 'abai', which means 'father' in the Hamgyeong-do dialect, it preserves a history filled with the sorrow and grief of division. It became a nationwide tourist attraction after becoming famous as a filming location for the drama 'Autumn in My Heart', and now the 2nd and 3rd generations of the displaced people are carrying on the Hamgyeong-do food culture.
It is rich in unique foods such as Abai sundae, spicy fermented flounder (gajami sikhae), and Hamheung naengmyeon, and you can also enjoy the unique experience of taking a non-motorized gaetbae (hand-pulled boat) to and from downtown Sokcho. Feel the mood of the village while admiring the beautiful scenery of the East Sea and Seoraksan Mountain from Cheongho Beach and the Geumgangdaegyo Bridge Observatory.
