Mokpo's Gatbawi Rock is a mysterious natural heritage shaped by waves and wind over a long period of time, boasting a unique shape that looks like two people side by side wearing satgat (traditional bamboo hats). Designated as Natural Monument No. 500, this rock took its current form through weathering caused by salt and moisture at the point where seawater and freshwater meet.
The hat shape on the upper part of the rock and the hollowed-out weathering holes at the bottom form a beautiful topography as if a person is wearing a satgat. Various legends, such as the filial piety of a son who could not take care of his sick father, or the satgat left behind by Buddha, have been handed down, adding even more mystery.
