Located at the northern foot of Mudeungsan, Wonhyosa Temple is a historic temple said to have been founded by Wonhyodaesa during the Silla period. Seeming to hide within the grand mountain terrain, this place started as a small hermitage at the end of Silla and took the form of a temple during the reign of King Chungsuk of Goryeo, and went through repeated destruction and rebuilding during the Imjin War and the Han-gukjeonjaeng. Within the temple grounds, the Mansusan bronze bell and east stupa designated as Gwangju City tangible heritage, along with excavated clay Buddhist statues, prove the long history of the temple.
If you go up to the Hoeamdang pavilion opposite the Great Hero Hall, the outstanding scenery of Mudeungsan, up to Uisangbong Peak and Cheonwangbong Peak, comes into view at a glance, presenting a moving experience as if you have come to another world. Wonhyosa Temple, loved as a starting point for climbing Mudeungsan and as a driving course, is a mother-like temple where you can feel peace in nature.
