Namgwangju Market naturally formed with the opening of Namgwangju Station on the Gyeongjeon Line in the 1930s, and was once the gathering place for products of Namdo where agricultural and marine products from all over Jeonnam converged. It is also the historical site of the sorrowful scenery of Namgwangju Station, which was the background of poet Kwak Jae-gu's "At Sapyeong Station", and where merchants shared rice balls with the citizen militia during the 5·18 Minjuhwaundong, sharing the pain together. It faced a crisis with the closure of Namgwangju Station in 2000, but regained its vitality with modernization and the opening of the urban railway.
Today, as a specialized seafood market representing Gwangju, the 'Namgwangju Sunrise Market', which opens from 2 AM to 5 AM, is especially famous as a lively site where you can find freshly caught seafood.
