Jeungsimsa Temple, located at the western foot of Mudeungsan, is a historic temple said to have been founded by Cheolgamseonsa Doyun in the 4th year of King Heonan of Silla (860). It contains the deep meaning of escaping earthly desires to attain enlightenment and realizing that all sentient beings are originally Buddha. Although it suffered the pain of having most of its halls destroyed during the Han-gukjeonjaeng, it was restored starting in the 1970s and took on its current appearance.
In particular, O Baek Jeon Hall, the only one to survive the flames of war, was built during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon and is a precious hall, being the only one in the Jeonnam region to enshrine the Obaengnahan statues. It also embraces various cultural heritages, including the treasure 'Cheoljobirojanabuljwasang' with its gentle smile, a three-story stone pagoda, and the Stone Bodhisattva Standing Statue, making it a place where you can feel the breath of quiet history along with the nature of Mudeungsan.
