In May 1980, 5. 18 Democracy Square, where passionate shouts for democracy echoed, is the heart of the Gwangju Democratization Movement and a symbolic place of Korea's democracy. Called the 'Square in front of the Provincial Office' at the time, this is a historical site where countless citizens and students gathered to hold the Minjongminjudaeseonghoe, and the fountain in the center of the square was used as a podium for citizens.
At the back, the main building of the former Jeonnamdocheong, where the citizen militia fought their last stand, has been restored to its appearance at the time, and the Sangmugwan, where the bodies of the victims were temporarily placed, also testifies to the painful history. The clock tower, which witnessed every moment of 5. 18, plays 'March for the Beloved' every day at 5:18 PM to remember the spirit of that day, and the Bell Pavilion of Democracy honors the democratic spirits through a bell-ringing event on anniversaries.
Take a walk here and reflect on important moments in modern Korea history.
