Camp Historic Park was the world's largest single prisoner-of-war camp, established in 1951 during the Korean War to accommodate the rapidly increasing number of North Korean and Chinese POWs. Once holding over 173,000 prisoners, it is a site of tragic history where extreme ideological conflicts and frequent bloody clashes occurred between pro-communist and anti-communist prisoners over repatriation. After going through turbulent times, such as the kidnapping of Brigadier General Dodd in 1952, it was closed with the armistice.
However, its preservation value as a place of historical education to inform about the horrors of war and the importance of peace was recognized, and it was developed into a Historic Park today. Through the barracks of that time, the remnants of the guard buildings, and vivid dioramas, you can vividly experience the tragedy of war and the painful lives of the prisoners, and learn the lessons of history.
