Suncheon Waeseong Fortress is one of the Japanese fortresses built on the southern coast by the Japanese raiders during the Imjin War and Jeongyu War. It was constructed by the Japanese commander Konishi Yukinaga as a base for attacking Honam and as a retreat route. It was also called Waegyoseong because a bridge was built over the moat where seawater originally flowed in, and the bridge was cut off at night.
This is the historic site where the Battle of Waegyoseong, the last fierce battle of the Imjin War, took place, and it is a historic place where Admiral Yi Sun-sin lured Konishi Yukinaga to the waters off Noryang and won a great victory. Currently, the base of the inner fortress wall and the site of the castle tower remain, allowing you to vividly feel the fierce history of that time and get a glimpse of the characteristics of Japanese fortress architecture. When you climb the base of the castle tower, you can see the surrounding scenery at a glance, making it an important place to reflect on a painful history.
