Hyehwa-dong Kim Sang-hyup House is an urban modified hanok from the 1930s where Kim Sang-hyup, who served as the 17th Prime Minister and the president of Korea University, resided. Utilizing the sloping hilly terrain as it is, it was designed with a high stone embankment and stone steps to climb, and the Anchae (Women's Quarters), Sarangchae (Men's Quarters), Jungmunchae (Middle Gate Quarters), and Byeolchae (Annex) are arranged three-dimensionally. While maintaining the traditional spatial composition of a noble family's house, it boldly introduced modern architectural elements such as a Western-style reception room next to the entrance and glass-door corridors, making it a precious folklore cultural heritage that shows the process of transition from traditional hanoks of the late Joseon period to modern residential forms.
