The Former Dongbonwon Temple Mokpo Branch was the first Japanese-style temple established in Mokpo in 1898, and was a base for Japanese Buddhism during the Japanese colonial period. The current stone building, constructed in the 1930s, displays a rare architectural style that elaborately expresses the form of a traditional Japanese wooden Buddhist hall. After liberation, it passed through being the Korean temple Jeonggwangsa Temple and was used as Mokpojung-anggyohoe, and was also a symbolic space for the democratization movement during the May 18 Democratization Movement.
Currently, it is operated as the 'Ogeorimunhwasenteo', and it is a place of deep historical significance where one can encounter the turbulent flow of Korea's modern and contemporary history in one space. Visitors can explore historical traces along with its unique architectural beauty.
