Frequently asked questions

What is Seon meditation?

Seon (Korean Zen) meditation comes from the contemplative tradition of Korean Buddhism. Instead of sitting, this guide is a walking meditation: you move slowly between the temple halls, keeping your attention on your breath and your steps.

Which temples can I do it at?

Three temples in Seoul: Bongeunsa (Gangnam), Jogyesa (Jongno) and Hwagyesa (Gangbuk). Each has six meditation stops.

How long does it take?

About 36 minutes at Bongeunsa, 25 at Jogyesa and 23 at Hwagyesa. You can also choose only the halls you like.

Do I need a reservation or a ticket?

No. The TripAudio app and the guides are free, and admission to all three temples is free. Come any time during opening hours.

Which languages are available?

English and Korean. In the Japanese and Chinese apps the English audio plays.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. The voice guides your breathing and your steps one at a time. Please wear earphones so the grounds stay quiet for others.
