Tongyeong Ottchil Art Museum is Korea's first museum dedicated to ottchil (Korean lacquer), established in 2006 by Director Kim Seong-su, the founder of ottchil painting. It opened in Tongyeong, the home of mother-of-pearl lacquerware, to revive the traditional ottchil culture that had been declining since the 1970s. Founder Director Kim Seong-su is a pioneer who expanded ottchil beyond crafts into painting, pioneering a new genre called 'ottchil painting' that utilizes the physical properties and aesthetic characteristics of ottchil.
At the entrance of the museum, the 'Gate of Lacquer Art' engraved with a phoenix wishing for the revival of 400 years of Tongyeong mother-of-pearl lacquerware welcomes visitors. Here, you can appreciate various works from traditional ottchil crafts to modern ottchil paintings, fully experiencing the deep and subtle luster unique to ottchil.
