Tongyeong Samdo Sugun Tongjeyeong is the headquarters that commanded the naval forces of the three provinces of Chungcheong, Jeolla, and Gyeongsang during the Joseon Dynasty. It was moved and established at its current location in 1604 after the Imjin War, and the place name 'Tongyeong' is also derived from 'Tongjeyeong'. The central building here, National Treasure Sebyeonggwan Hall, holds the meaning of 'washing weapons to pray for peace', and boasts a magnificent presence as one of the largest wooden buildings of the Joseon Dynasty, along with Gyeonghoeru Pavilion in Gyeongbokgung Palace and Jinnamgwan Hall in Yeosu.
The architectural structure, which is wide open without walls or windows, well demonstrates the spirit of Samdo Sugun Tongjeyeong at the time. You can deeply experience the history and culture of the Joseon naval forces through places such as Unjudang Hall, the office of the naval commander, the Naea living quarters, and the Site of 12 Workshops where military supplies and tribute items were produced.
