Paldalmun Gate, the southern gate of Suwon Hwaseong, is a treasure that has been with citizens in the center of downtown Suwon for over 200 years, just like its name meaning paths opening in all directions. It is one of the various facilities of Suwon Hwaseong built by Jeongjodaewang when he moved the tomb of his father, Sadoseja, to Suwon. Construction started in 1794 and was completed in 1796.
To robustly defend the fortress from enemies, it is surrounded by a semi-circular ongseong (defensive wall) and even equipped with devices to pour hot water on enemies climbing the walls, showing the essence of late Joseon gate architecture. You can catch a glimpse of not only its splendid and grand appearance but also the spirit of recording that inscribed the names of construction participants through a real-name construction system. Currently, the fortress walls have been demolished leaving only the gate, but when night falls, it is illuminated, presenting a beautiful night view and remaining an attraction loved by Suwon citizens.
