Towangseong Falls, one of Seoraksan's magnificent hidden scenic spots, is Korea's longest continuous waterfall, featuring a three-tier structure with a total length of 320m. Its name originates from the Five Elements theory, which suggests that strange rocks and peaks are formed when the earth's energy is vigorous, and the character for 'castle' (seong) was attached because the sheer rocky peaks surround it like a fortress wall. After being designated as a national park in 1970, public access was restricted for 45 years due to safety reasons, until it unveiled itself again in 2015 when an extended trail and observatory were newly built from Biryong Falls.
If you pass Biryong Falls and climb about 900 steep stairs, you can take in not only the majestic waterfall stream but also the downtown Sokcho and the East Sea in the distance at a glance.
