It was a strategic point for national defense guarding the Ganghwa Strait from the Goryeo period to the Joseon period. In particular, it is a historical site where fierce battles were fought against the French and American forces during the Byeong-inyang-yo in 1866 and the Sinmiyang-yo in 1871. It suffered the pain of being mostly destroyed by an artillery battle with the American fleet during the Sinmiyang-yo, but the fortress walls, artillery batteries, and Gongjoru Gate were restored in the 1970s and remain to this day.
The Gyeonggobi Monument erected here shows the firm will of the isolationist policy at the time, and visitors can reflect on the tragic history, honor the spirit of national defense, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Ganghwa Strait.
