Chojijin Fort, which was an important gateway of the Ganghwa Strait, is a historic fortress established in the 6th year of King Hyojong of Joseon (1655). It is also a site of national ordeal where they fought against foreign invasion, experiencing the turbulent moments of modern history firsthand, such as the 1871 Sinmiyang-yo and the 1875 Ganghwa Island incident. As if proving the fierce battles of that time, the restored watchtower and fortress walls, as well as the pine tree with clear cannonball marks remaining, offer a deep resonance to visitors.
Currently, in its restored state from 1973, you can commemorate the patriotic spirit of the ancestors along with the cannons exhibited here. It is also a good place to appreciate the beautiful sunset with Chojidaegyo and Gimpo as a background and take commemorative photos.
