As the site of a detached palace of the Silla royal palace, it was the Donggung where the crown prince resided, as well as a place for holding banquets during national celebrations or when welcoming precious guests. After the fall of Silla, it became a ruin through the Goryeo and Joseon periods, and it was also called 'Anapji' because poets and scholars recited poems looking at the pond, saying 'the glamorous palace is gone and only geese and ducks fly in'. In 1975, while restoring the pond, over 30,000 artifacts offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Silla period were excavated, adding to its value.
Today, the three restored pavilions and the beautiful pond harmonize, making it loved as one of the top fantastic night view spots in Gyeongju.
