The Seokjangni Site, located along the Geumgang River in Gongju, is an important historical site that first revealed the existence of the Paleolithic Age on the Korean Peninsula. The excavation, which started with an accidental discovery, overturned the claim that there was no Paleolithic Age in Korea at the time and served as an opportunity to extend the beginning of our history back hundreds of thousands of years. Various stone tools, such as choppers, scrapers, and hand axes, were excavated here, and a house site from about 25,000 years ago along with pollen that gives a glimpse into the natural environment of the time were also discovered.
13 cultural layers ranging from the Early Paleolithic to the Bronze Age have been identified, allowing you to see the flow of time in one place.
