Seokjang-ri Museum, located along the Geumgang River in Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do, was built on the historical site where Korea's first Paleolithic remains were excavated. In 1964, triggered by an accidental discovery by an American graduate student, an excavation team led by Professor Son Bo-gi of Yonsei University began digging, proving the existence of the Paleolithic Age on the Korean Peninsula for the first time. This discovery is recorded as an important event that changed the paradigm of Korean prehistoric research.
The museum features a permanent exhibition hall showing the lifestyle of the Paleolithic Age and an outdoor prehistoric park recreating the appearance at the time of excavation. In particular, the chipped stone making experience program for children and the Gongju Seokjang-ri Paleolithic Festival held every May make this a special place for history education and outings.
