Munbae Village, located deep in the mountains beyond Gugokpokpo Falls in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, is a mountain basin where slash-and-burn farmers once cultivated and lived. As for the origin of the village's name, there is a theory that it comes from the topography shaped like a ship heavily loaded with cargo, and a story that it was named because there were many Munbae (wild pear) trees. During Han-gukjeonjaeng, it was such a remote backwoods that the residents did not even know the news of the war, but today it is loved as a resting place retaining an affectionate rural landscape.
If you climb along the Gugokpokpo Falls ridge trail, the tranquil village unfolds, and it is good to relieve the fatigue of hiking by enjoying sanchae-bibimbap and local foods at a traditional restaurant.
