Baekdo Island, located in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, is said to be named using the character 'Baek (白)' (white), which is one stroke less than 'Baek (百)' (one hundred), because it is made up of 99 islands. There is also a theory that it was named so because the entire island looks white from a distance. A touching legend involving the son of the Jade Emperor and the daughter of the Dragon King is handed down here.
It boasts a beautiful landscape, enough to be called the Haegeumgang of Namhae, and was designated as State-designated Cultural Heritage Scenic Site No. 7 in 1978. Currently, landing directly on the island is prohibited to preserve the ecosystem, and visitors can enjoy the bizarre rocks and primeval spectacular views by taking a cruise ship around the island.
It is a treasure trove of nature inhabited by rare flora and fauna such as the wind orchid and the black wood pigeon, and is also the center of the Geomundo fishing ground.
