Gyeryongsan is a famous mountain named for its resemblance to a dragon wearing a rooster's crest, and it was designated as Korea's second national park in 1968. Centered around its main peak, Cheonhwangbong Peak, beautiful peaks such as Yeoncheonbong Peak and Sambulbong Peak form a continuous line. Known as an auspicious site according to feng shui, it holds the history of King Taejo of Joseon considering relocating the capital here.
It is also a historical site that served as a major base for the Donghak Peasant Revolution, and is home to the Nammaetap Pagodas (the Five-Story and Seven-Story Stone Pagodas of Cheongnyangsa Temple Site), which carry a legend about a tiger and a monk. Visitors can explore historic temples such as Donghaksa Temple and Gapsa Temple, or hike various trails while enjoying the ever-changing and beautiful natural scenery throughout the four seasons, including the rocky Jayeonseongneung Ridge, the snowscape of Sambulbong Peak, and the sea of clouds at Gwaneumbong Peak.
