Located at the foot of Palgongsan in Daegu, Donghwasa Temple is a historic temple founded in the 15th year of King Soji of Silla (493). It is said that when Sim Ji-wang-sa rebuilt it in the 7th year of King Heungdeok (832), paulownia flowers were in full bloom even in midwinter, earning it the name 'Donghwasa Temple'. As the stage of the Battle of Gongsan during the Goryeo period and the center of state-protection Buddhism where Great Master Samyeong commanded the monk army during the Joseon period, it has played an important role at every historical turning point.
The current Great Hero Hall showcases the beauty of late Joseon architecture, characterized by its unrefined natural pillars and delicate floral lattice doors. 'Tongil-yaksayeoraedaebul (Great Unification Buddha)', the world's largest stone Yaksayeoraebul built with the aspiration for national unification, is the symbol of Donghwasa Temple and provides deep emotion to visitors. You can feel history and peace at the same time in this tranquil temple harmonized with the beautiful natural scenery of Palgongsan.
