Located in Seodaemun Independence Park, Seodaemun District, Seoul, Independence Gate is a historic site built in 1897 under the leadership of the Independence Club, reflecting the will for independent sovereignty and freedom. It was erected on the site of Yeongeunmun, which was torn down after being used to welcome envoys from China during the Joseon period, and represents a strong resolve not to allow foreign interference. Modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France, it was constructed with granite, and the keystone is engraved with a plum blossom pattern symbolizing the Joseon Dynasty.
At the top of the gate, the words 'Independence Gate' and the Taegeukgi are engraved, making it a representative symbol of the Republic of Korea's independent sovereignty.
