As the eastern main gate of the outer wall of Seoul Fortress that surrounded Hanyang, the capital during the Joseon period, it is more commonly known by the name 'Dongdaemun'. First built in 1398, its current appearance is from when it was rebuilt in 1869 during the reign of King Gojong. Unlike other fortress gates, its greatest architectural feature is having a semi-circular defensive wall to protect the gate.
You can appreciate its solid and grand appearance during the day, and its beautiful night view shining under colorful lights at night. Harmonizing with the modern Dongdaemun shopping town, it creates a unique scenery where the past and present coexist.
