Haebangchon, meaning a village formed along with Gwangbok (liberation), is situated on a hill where Namsan Tower looks close enough to touch. Started after the Korean War when displaced people and those returning from overseas settled here, this place creates a unique landscape with old houses densely packed between steep hills and narrow alleys. Recently, it has been reborn as an exotic and free-spirited neighborhood as artists full of personality and foreigners have gathered.
Enjoy a special time taking in the wide-open view of Seoul while sitting at a rooftop cafe or restaurant situated along the hill, or looking around the workshops and independent bookstores hidden throughout the alleys.
