Gongjicheon Stream, which crosses the downtown of Chuncheon, takes its name from 'Gomjinnae', a pure Korean word meaning 'sacred and great stream'. In the 1960s and 70s, it was the center of winter sports where the national winter sports festival ice skating competitions were held, but it once suffered from pollution. Later, through consistent environmental purification projects, it was reborn as the beautiful citizens' resting place it is today, and in the 1990s, the MBC Riverside Song Festival was held here three times.
This place is also famous as the location where Chuncheon-born soccer player Son Heung-min practiced shooting every day during his unknown days. In the park, there are statues of late Joseon righteous army commander Ryu In-seok and the first female righteous army commander Yun Hui-sun, as well as a memorial hall for Ethiopia, a participating country in the Korean War.
