This is a temple completed by King Sinmun to honor the great achievement of King Munmu, who unified the Three Kingdoms, and to uphold his dying wish to become a dragon after death to protect the country. Although only the site remains now, a pair of massive three-story stone pagodas standing firmly looking out over the East Sea proves a thousand years of time. The grandeur of the two stone pagodas, designated as National Treasures, allows you to feel the spirit of Unified Silla even in the loneliness of the ruined temple site.
In particular, the unique underground structure of the main hall, which was designed according to legend so that King Munmu, who became a dragon, could enter and exit, stimulates a mysterious imagination. Along with the Tomb of King Munmu in the East Sea, it is a deeply meaningful historic site where you can catch a glimpse of the Silla people's will to defend the country.
